Food Insecurity. Definition, Reasons, Causes and Status Essay

Food Insecurity. Definition, Reasons, Causes and Status - Essay Example In the conversation, the attention will stay on surveying what food instability means, what causes it and the results that collect thereof. The conversation depends on a basic assessment of companion looked into writing starting with the definition and afterward talking about what causes it, and how it rises in the creating scene. Characterizing and Contextualizing Food Insecurity The Context of Food Security Since the 1970s, the term food instability has been distinctively used to allude to various related yet regularly assorted ideas. Yu, You, and Fan (2010) contend, â€Å"there are different depictions of food security in addition to the ideas of food security that have advanced, in the past 30 years, to mirror the change in legitimate strategy thinking† (p. 30). This variation comprehension of food security and frailty has been investigated by Clay (2002) since the World Food Conference started a conversation of food security in the mid 1970s, both at the national and worl dwide level. As will rise hereunder, food security incorporates inquiries of food flexibly, food accessibility, food value steadiness, topographical areas and typology of accessible food (Bernstein, Crow and Johnson, 1992, pp. 34 - 71). In any case, to comprehend the term food instability, it is basic to first contextualize the term food security. As indicated by the United Nations, food security ought to be characterized as â€Å"all individuals consistently having both physical and monetary access to the essential food they need† (Clay, 2002, p. 4). As indicated by UN figures, almost 1 billion individuals on the planet today are not ensured that they can get to, bear the cost of and consistently find sufficient food. For these 2 billion individuals, they may not be ravenous and in basic need of food, however they can't ensure that they will have anything to eat tomorrow to adequately support their wellbeing. As indicated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (2013), â₠¬Å"a aggregate of 842 million individuals in 2011â€2013, or around one of every eight people all around, were foreseen to be experiencing incessant yearning, routinely not getting enough food to lead a functioning life† ( ¶7). While this figure is moderately lower when contrasted with the 868 million individuals detailed somewhere in the range of 2010 and 2012, and keeping in mind that the quantity of undernourished individuals has diminished with 17% based on what was recorded somewhere in the range of 1990 and 1992, food frailty is as yet a significant worldwide issue. All things considered, they are unreliable about the wellspring of their imperative eating regimens, where to discover food, when and whether such food would be reasonable when gotten to (Curtis, Hubbard and Shepherd, 1988, 37). This setting consequently presents the elements of food security, an entangled procedure dictated by various variables from neediness levels to climatic conditions, from geology t o administration, from instruction and attention to culture (Grigg, 1993, p. 21; Curtis, Hubbard and Shepherd, 1988, p. 61; Bernstein, Crow and Johnson, 1992, p. 69; Kent, 1984, p. 23). The key inquiry, accordingly, is about assurance that food will be accessible when required, just as which kind of food will be avai

DNA Essay example - 1427 Words

DNA is a term that has been used in science as well as in many parts of daily life. The general public knows that DNA is a part of our bodies but they may wonder what exactly is DNA? DNA is a term used for deoxyribonucleic acid and it is the genetic material of all organisms, it is the molecule of life and it determines all of our physical characteristics. DNA is present in every single form of life. More than 50 years after the science of genetics was established and the patterns of inheritance were clarified, the largest questions remained unanswered: How are the chromosomes and their genes copied exactly from cell to cell, and how do they direct the structure and behavior of living things? Two American geneticists, George†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"To make a new, identical copy of the DNA molecule, the two strands unwind and separate at the bases which are weakly bound; with more nucleotides available in the cell, new complementary bases can link with each separated strand, and two double helixes result.† (Caldwell) Since the â€Å"backbone† of every chromosome is a single long, double-stranded molecule of DNA, the production of two identical double helixes will result in the production of two identical chromosomes. The DNA backbone is actually longer than the chromosome but is tightly coiled up within it. This packing is now known to be based on minute particles of protein known as nucleosomes, that can only be seen under the most powerful electron microscope. The DNA is wound around each nucleosome to form a beaded structure. The structure is then further folded so that the beads associate in regular coils. Thus, the DNA has a â€Å"coiled-coil† configuration. After the discoveries of Watson and Crick, the question that remained was how the DNA directs the formation of proteins, compounds central to all the processes of life. Proteins are not only the major components of most cell structures, they also control virtually all the chemical reactions that occur in living matter. The ability of a protein to act as part of a structure, or as an enzyme affecting the rate of a particular chemical reaction, depends on its molecular shape. This shape, in turn,Show MoreRelatedDna Analysis On Dna And Dna1535 Words   |  7 PagesIntroduction DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is the genetic material of life and is made up of monomers called nucleotides. Nucleotides are monomers made up of a phosphate group, a sugar, and a nitrogenous base. (Freeman, 2014) The way that DNA is able to store information is in its nitrogenous bases. There are four different types of nitrogenous bases that DNA strands contain: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), thymine (T). Naturalistic Observation Of Student s A Coffee Line

Naturalistic Observation of Student’s in a Coffee Line In the United States, 85% of adults own a cell phone, with 18 to 24 year olds texting the most (Zickuhr, 2011). Of these adults, 67% reported that they check their phone even if they do not hear it ringing, 44% sleep with the phone beside their bed, and 29% reported they could not live without their cell phone (Smith, 2012). In addition, according to the Baylor University report, studies show that young adults check their phone an average of 60 times a day. This study examined cell phone use among university students that were alone and in a group. Specifically, we were interested in observing whether students alone in a coffee line or students in a group in a coffee line, spent more or less time on their cell phone. We were also interested to observe if gender affected cell phone usage and whether males or females were more likely to be in a group. The purpose of this study was to determine if university students that are alone spend more or less time on their phone than students that are in a group. We also examined if gender was an important factor on whether a student was in a group or alone. Using naturalistic observation, we calculated the amount of time individual students were on their phone per three minute time interval. The hypothesis was that students alone in a coffee line would spend the most time on their phone. We also predicted that women were more likely than men to be in a group. Teacher’s Pay for Performance Free Essays

Should Teacher’s Salaries Be Based on Student’s Academic Performance? Is a student’s failure in a class an indication that a teacher or professor did not adequately perform his or her job? There are two points of view on this issue. Many will argue that teachers should be paid on a merit system, or Pay for Performance system. There are some that believe that there are too many external factors in a class room for a teacher’s salary to be based on how he or she performs in the class room. We will write a custom essay sample on Teacher’s Pay for Performance or any similar topic only for you Order Now Teacher’s pay for performance will be highlighted by first discussing what is pay for performance, next, detailing the definition of teaching, and finally, exploring the question of should teacher’s salaries be based on a student’s academic performance. Pay for performance is essentially when an employee is allowed to be partly responsible for his or her pay increase. A company will set goals as well as allow the employee to set his or her own goals and if the employee meets those goals, he or she will get a raise. These raises are based on levels of performance ranging from one to five. A level of one means that an employee failed to meet his or her expectations. A level of two means that an employee needs improvements in some areas. A of three means that an employee met his or her expectations. A level of four means that an employee exceeded his or her expectations. A level of five means that the employee far exceeded his or her expectations or as some managers imply, he or she is a â€Å"super employee†. Pay for performance is designed to inspire employees to work harder so they can obtain higher raises and bonuses if they reach a certain level. Employees may also be motivated to perform better the next year. The question remains, should teachers be on this type of merit system? Teaching is conveying knowledge in formal learning institutions, whether it is a school, K-12, or a university or college. Teachers have a major influence on a student’s life. They plant seeds of knowledge that continue to grow with a student. They support, empower, engage and care for their students. Today, most teachers are paid based on their seniority or academic degrees. Perhaps they should be paid based on their level of accomplishment and responsibility. Teacher evaluations should be based partly on student achievement data and their raises should be based on student’s academic performance. If teachers were paid based on student’s academic achievements, they would put forth more effort to provide a higher quality of teaching. Competition would be raised among teachers and a possibility of higher salaries would encourage them to perform better. If teachers were paid for their performance it might also differentiate teachers who care about their student’s performance from those who only want to collect a paycheck. On the other side of the coin, there are also reasons why a teacher’s salary should not be based on student’s academic performance. The first being that there is a lack of standard academic performance tests, which means there is no measurement criteria. There is the possibility that some teachers might give students higher grades to benefit their salaries. The strongest argument against teacher pay for performance would be that all students do not have the same level of intelligence, commitment, or determination. It may not be fair to hold a teacher responsible for a student that cannot learn or do not want to learn. Given the scenario that a teacher’s pay increases would be based on student’s academic performance, their levels of performance could range from one to five also. A level five would indicate that all students have passed the class with a grade of B or better and performed well on a standardized test. A level four would indicate that all students passed the class with a grade of C or better. A level three would indicate that 80 percent of the students passed the class. A level two would indicate that at least 50 percent of the students passed the class. A level one would indicate that only 20 percent of the students passed the class or a student has failed the class more than once under the same teacher. Teachers that perform at level one should not receive pay increases. A performance level of three or above should receive salary increases. An example of a level one performance would be if a student failed the same class two or more times or if only four out of twenty students passed a class, then that teacher or professor obviously has not imparted the knowledge to their students that they set out to convey. An example of a level three teacher’s performance would be if his or her students continuously increase their academic performance or pass standardize tests. In conclusion, I assert that teacher’s salaries should be based on their student’s academic performances. If teachers hit their levels, they should receive higher raises. It they fail their students, their salary should not increase. There are a lot of educators that would disagree with this assertion; however, given the state of our education system, a change needs to be put in place. If teachers are required to perform better and are paid better based on their performance, then students will perform better. How to cite Teacher’s Pay for Performance, Essay examples

Management research methods Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Management research methods - Assignment Example However, from the point of view of the consumers, it is of vital concern that the personal motivations that prompt them to make better use of the internet as shopping venue be ascertained. While many, if not all, the products sold online are also available from brick and mortar stores and other conventional venues such as through the televised home shopping network, the motivations for customers to purchase online appears to be influenced by a special set of factors which pertains exclusively to the online technology. The individual must have a strong sense of confidence in trusting the system, because (1) he/she has not physically examined the product he/she is actually buying, only being able to view a product replica on his/her monitor or screen; (2) he/she is transacting with a business entity he/she only sees onscreen, and which may be located elsewhere on the globe. Without a physical store to go to, he or she may not know how to reach the vendor if his/her claim is unsatisfied ; (3) the customer has to have his/her payment transmitted before delivery of the purchased item, thus sending the cash through electronic means is a leap of faith; and (4) release of the customer’s bank account or credit card number is a risky act which may be the source of identity fraud and electronic theft. These are significant issues to which high risks are attached, and savvy consumers will be usually cautious about engaging in these acts. It is therefore the result of strong motivational forces that consumers would agree to undertaking these risks in order to shop online. The survey conducted here therefore has the specific purpose of determining what the important factors are that influence an individual’s desire to purchase items online, despite the attendant risks. Design of the survey The survey is designed to be answered by respondents who have personally transacted a purchase over the internet. The respondents may be of any age, of either gender, and of a ny walk of life. The only disqualifying attribute is if the individual has not experienced purchasing something over the internet. In this sense, internet or online shopping includes all e-commerce facilities for retail customers online, from ordering merchandise from particular retailers, to buying something from other customers in online auctions such as the e-Bay site. The population thus includes everybody who has shopped online at least once. The size of the sample is ideally one that is representative; however, since internet shopping involves an indeterminate number of people, most likely running into the hundreds of thousands or millions with multiple transactions, then it is difficult to ascertain a representative number. The survey should therefore aim for a large number, and from observing the sample sizes shown in the different academic studies, a good number would be 250 to 350 respondents. It is also important to make sure that the locations surveyed represent as equal ly as possible all the area intended to be covered by the study. The sample selection method must ensure the highest chances of getting a representative sample, while ensuring that the intended respondents are reached and their existence and qualifications verified. Inasmuch as those who are qualified to respond to this survey are those who are exposed to and confident

Hamlet: In His Right Minds Eye :: Shakespeare Hamlet Essays

Hamlet: In His Right Mind's Eye         Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Crazy, or not crazy- That is the question.   The matter of Hamlet's so called madness, has been an item of debate since the first performance, and will probably be a continuing argument well into the future.   I believe Hamlet was not crazy, because he proves to be in complete control of his psyche   in several parts of the play.   These three reasons are the main points of argument for Hamlet's sanity.   His behaviors is only erratic in front of certain people, he shows logic and reasoning in his plotting,   and finally, actually admits to several people to be only â€Å"acting† mad.   These are hardly the actions of a madman.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   First of all,   the fact that Hamlet's irrational behavior emerges only in front of certain individuals shows he was only acting.   He acts insane in front of Polonius, Claudius,   Gertrude and Ophelia, while remaining perfectly normal in front of Horatio, Marcellus, the players and the gravedigger.   Hamlet convinces Ophelia of his madness by going   into her room   â€Å"with a look so piteous in purport as if he had been loosed out of hell to speak of horrors,† (2.1.92)and grabbed her and examined her face.   Then he let out †a sigh so piteous and profound as it did seem to shatter all his bulk and end his being.† (2.1.106) After that incident, Polonius believes, that Hamlet's madness â€Å"is the very ecstasy of love.†(2.1.115)   Claudius is convinced, however, that that is not the case.  Ã‚   He believes that something else is troubling Hamlet. â€Å"Love?   His affections do not that way tend;   Nor what he spake, though it lacked form a little, was not like madness.   there's something in his soul o'er   which his melancholy sits on brood† (3.1.176)   After Hamlet kills Polonius, Gertrude becomes completely convinced that Hamlet is â€Å"Mad as the sea and the wind when both contend which is mightier.†(4.1.7) With these characters convinced of his madness, Hamlet is able to carry out several plans to avenge his father's death.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The logic he uses in his plots is proof of a sane mind.   He successfully uses the players to reveal Claudius is the murderer by changing the play   they perform to reenact the murder of Hamlet's father. â€Å"Let the galled jade wince; our withers are unwrung.† . When the murder scene is enacted, Claudius calls for lights and storms out of the room.   Claudius, knowing Hamlet is a threat, has him sent to England along with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.   the two bear a letter that was to have Hamlet executed upon arrival in England.

Effects of Technology Essay - 660 Words

The Effects of Technology There is no escape from technology. In most cases this is not a problem though. Many people respect and admire technology because it is there to benefit them. Without the technological advances we have had over the years, the world would not be what it is today. What people don#8217;t understand is that technology can actually be a bad thing. In society today, people are looking for more and more ways to be entertained, and all it is doing is causing problems. People are doing less and less thinking and more and more watching, listening, and playing, all because of technology. Forms of entertainment like the Internet, television and even video games seem harmless to people, but they are really not.†¦show more content†¦People of all ages are addicted to television. On average, people watch about thirty hours of television a week. But the people who go beyond this mark are known to society as #8220;couch potatoes#8221;. The #8220;couch potat oes#8221; are the people who sit in front of the television for hours on end, and will only get out of their seat to get something to drink or to go to the bathroom. Social gatherings and even family communication is being affected by the amount of television people are watching. At the beginning, people didn#8217;t know what they were going to do with a television, but now the question is how could people survive without a television. The Internet and Television are probably the two biggest technologies that are affecting people today. Video games though are another technology that is affecting the individual, mainly teenagers and kids. Much like television, video game problems come with the content of the game. Many of the video games on the market today are structured toward violence. The objective of these games is to either beat your opponent up or kill your opponent. Kids play these games, and much like television, see what the game is portraying and feel it is all rig ht to do the same things. Whether it is the Internet, television, or even video games, technological advancements have their advantages and disadvantages.
